  Passing Marks for Congo Election

The Carter Center today released its evaluation of the August 20 elections in DR Congo:

"The Carter Center did not find evidence of widespread or systematic manipulation. The Center concludes that the presidential results announced August 20 are credible; legislative results, on the whole, are also credible, but cannot be validated in detail because of the shortcomings outlined in this statement."

Also, we reported earlier that Atlanta is expecting a Chinese consulate? Now the news is, maybe not.

Iran over to see some great movies

Has it been a year? Guess so. The High Museum's annual Iranian Film Fest starts tonight with the biggest hit of 2005 in Iran, "MAXX", a musical comedy about mistaken identity when Iran invites a distinguished conductor for a concert in his homeland, but accidentally gets an uncouth nightclub singer.

Got two movies each weekend through September 30. All in Persian with subtitles.

  Hooray for Bollywood

There is a Bollywood theatre in Atlanta. Well, by "Atlanta", I mean Norcross. And by "Bollywood", I mean "international but heavy on South Asia." Check out the offerings at Galaxy Cinema.

Also, The Year of Kenya at KSU is upon us. Most events are free and open to the public.

News Today, guest starring Shimon Peres

Israeli DPM Shimon Peres was in town today "as part of a four-day tour of six U.S. cities to raise humanitarian funds for parts of northern Israel damaged during the war."

The donations will go to the "Israel Crisis Fund", a worldwide initiative to get $2.5 million for existing organizations operating in Northern Israel.

He was a guest of the Atlanta Jewish Federation, a very busy NGO on Spring Street where you can find social action information, volunteer opportunities, and the "Save Darfur coalition of Georgia."

  "Come to our City!"

Atlanta hatches new strategies to profit from the international economy.

In the great tradition of Atlanta boosterism, the Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and various titans of commerce today released their strategies to attract further international attention to our city.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the C of C consulted Thomas Friedman for his opinion last year after reading _The World is Flat_. GDEcD is trying to get a Chinese Consulate opened up here. Delta wants to be awarded a direct route to Beijing. And of course there's the long battle to get the Secretariat of the FTAA located here.

  The Economist
We hereby suspect the Economist has a stringer around here. This week (Aug 10, 06) its an article about Cynthia McKinney's loss; previously, one on Ralph Reed (Jul 20, 06); a few months ago it was a profile of Shirley Franklin (Aug 25, 05).

  Nippon Music Champ
A shout-out to Atlanta Global's favorite show on the whole radio, Nippon Music Champ, the J-pop show on 88.5. Sundays from 6-8 it is time to rock in ATL. The host, b-chan, has an encyclopedic knowledge of Japanese pop. We hope she's got a protege or lackey or confrere or or aide-de-camp or intern or sidekick or something, because we reckon she'll graduate one of these days.

We sadly decry the disappearance of the Radio Madras show. Two weeks or so ago, Shyam announced it would be shut down "permanently again". So now where can we hear records brought from grandma's collection in India?
